It is true that…

It is true that we have vaginas and breasts, but we are walking alone together because it pleases us to and that is our right. We have selected to be alone, and we intend to so remain.

–Edna St. Vincent Millay, the original hollaback girl?

Millay responding to street harassment back in the 1920s, as reported in the biography Savage Beauty.

Millay was an extreme badass, and I expect her to make regular appearances on this blog in the future.Millay

  1. As you know, I adore Millay. I’m interpreting her quote as she’s saying though we’re all women, our individual experiences are different. What do you think?

    • Well, the reason I linked to Hollaback is the context — this is what she said to a group of men following her and her sister and leering at them. I just love the century-old version of “Eyes up here, buddy.”
